Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, has condemned the deadly attack on communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, describing it as a “pure massacre” that has left at least 75 people dead.
The governor made the remarks on Wednesday night during a condolence visit to the affected area and the palace of the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Omar, following the brutal assault on Woro and Nuku communities.
“This is different from what we were used to, where people were kidnapped for ransom,” AbdulRazaq said. “This was a pure massacre. It is something we strongly condemn, and we deeply sympathise with you over this tragedy.”
According to the governor, 75 victims of the attack have already been buried. He commended security agencies for their response, while acknowledging the scale of the loss.
“Seventy-five people have been buried. We are short of words, but we appreciate the efforts of the security agencies,” he stated.
Reports indicate that the attackers struck Woro late on Tuesday night, killing at least 75 residents, while also destroying properties in neighbouring Nuku community.
Governor AbdulRazaq explained that the assault was directed at members of the Muslim community who had resisted what he described as a “perverted terrorist doctrine.”
“Because they absolutely refused to accept a change in their doctrine, they were attacked and massacred,” he said.
The governor assured residents that the perpetrators would be brought to justice, promising a massive security buildup in the area.
“They have murdered sleep, but I can assure you that within the next month, this entire area will be flooded with soldiers,” he declared.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with security agencies to eliminate terrorist elements from the state.
“We will continue to collaborate with the security agencies to rid our communities of these ungodly and misguided criminals,” AbdulRazaq added.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the deployment of an army battalion to Kwara State to restore security and protect vulnerable communities.
In a statement issued late Wednesday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the new military command would lead Operation Savannah Shield, aimed at crushing the terrorists and safeguarding defenceless residents.
President Tinubu condemned the “beastly attack,” noting that it was carried out against villagers who had rejected the extremists’ ideology.
The Nigerian military has since intensified counter-terrorism operations in the state. Just last month, the military announced the launch of sustained, coordinated offensive operations against terrorist elements operating in parts of Kwara State.
