Veteran Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has responded to criticism of his latest project, Anikulapo Series 2: The Ghoul Awakens, emphasizing that his films are designed for audiences who appreciate thought-provoking narratives.
In an Instagram video shared on February 10, Afolayan reflected on the early reactions from fans and critics alike. He acknowledged that not every viewer may connect with the series, which explores layered storytelling and complex characters.
“I make films for people who can think,” Afolayan stated, recalling his previous works, Irapada and The Figurine, which initially faced criticism but later achieved international recognition and awards.
The director compared reactions to Anikulapo season 2 to global hits like Game of Thrones, where audiences often require time to fully grasp intricate storylines before forming judgments. He noted that the series introduces new characters and subplots that demand patience to appreciate.
Feedback from scholars, academics, and viewers who enjoy intellectually stimulating content has been largely positive, Afolayan added, reinforcing his focus on meaningful cinema.
While some fans remain uncertain about the plot, many have expressed excitement for upcoming episodes and the series’ next season. Social media users also rallied behind the filmmaker:
-
@abikedabiri: “Great stuff! Glad to have been a part of the amazing experience.”
-
@oyindamolasanni_: “MY MENTOR A king I Stan… you too sabi, no worry.”

Currently streaming on Netflix in over 100 countries, The Ghoul Awakens is also being prepped for release in non-English speaking regions, expanding its global reach and introducing international audiences to Afolayan’s signature style.
Despite mixed reactions, the filmmaker remains appreciative of viewers who engage with his vision and promises continued dedication to quality storytelling.
