Kris Asimonye, wife of Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma, has disclosed that her husband advised her not to adopt his surname after their wedding.
In a recent post on Instagram, Kris recounted a conversation they had at the start of their marriage. According to her, Bovi encouraged her to retain her maiden name, a suggestion she admits she did not immediately understand.
The couple, who have three children together, made the decision early in their union.
Reflecting on it years later, Kris said the advice has proven valuable as she continues to build her professional identity.
“When I got married, my husband encouraged me not to change my last name. At the time, I did not fully understand why,” she wrote.
“Now, building Kris Asimonye as a brand, I understand completely.”
Her remarks have sparked conversations online about identity, marriage, and branding, particularly among women balancing family life with career ambitions.
By keeping her maiden name, Kris said she has been able to establish and grow her brand without altering the identity she had already begun to shape.
