Renowned Nigerian actor, dramatist, and academic, Kola Oyewo, is celebrating his 80th birthday today, March 27, 2026, marking a remarkable journey in the country’s cultural and creative industries.
With a career spanning more than five decades, Oyewo has remained a prominent figure in both stage and screen performances, contributing significantly to the growth of Nigerian theatre and Nollywood.
Born in 1946 in Oba Ile, Osun State, his passion for acting began early. He started his professional journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in the arts.
Oyewo rose to national prominence for his portrayal of Odewale in The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that cemented his reputation as a powerful stage actor. He later featured in notable productions such as Sango, Super Story, and Saworoide.
Beyond acting, Oyewo has built a distinguished academic career. He holds a Ph.D. in Drama from the University of Ibadan and has taught at institutions including Obafemi Awolowo University and Redeemer’s University.
He currently lectures at Elizade University in Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, where he continues to mentor the next generation of performers and scholars.
