Security forces in Kogi State have successfully prevented an assault on the Obajana Police Operational Base, detaining several suspected attackers in the process. The incident underscores the police’s ongoing efforts to tackle criminal networks and protect residents from armed banditry.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, William Aya, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, assuring residents of the police’s readiness to counter criminal threats. He also called on members of the public to continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies.
According to the statement, the attempted attack came in the wake of a major security operation conducted on January 10, 2026. The Nigeria Police Force, supported by its Air Wing, carried out clearance operations targeting known criminal hideouts and assembly points across Kogi State. The operation, which included precision airstrikes, reportedly unsettled criminal sleeper cells in the region.
“In a bid to retaliate, the criminal elements attempted to attack the Obajana Operational Base.
“The attempt was swiftly repelled as police operatives conducted a coordinated counter-drill, effectively neutralising and degrading the assailants. Several suspects were arrested during the exchange, many sustaining varying degrees of gunshot injuries”, the statement said.
Authorities say security operations are ongoing to track fleeing suspects, while investigations are underway to determine the source and motive behind the attack.
Following the incident, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of special operations in Kogi State, Alonyenu Idu, alongside the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, visited the Obajana Operational Base for an on-the-spot assessment.
During the visit, the AIG commended the officers for their courage and professionalism, urging them to remain vigilant in the ongoing fight against banditry and other criminal activities.
The police command assured residents of Obajana and surrounding communities that security operations across the state would be intensified and sustained until all criminal syndicates are dismantled.
