Content creator and philanthropist Mitchell Mukoro, widely known as King Mitchy, has issued a public apology following days of intense online criticism over her recent conduct on social media.
In a video message addressed to Nigerians, Mukoro acknowledged that her actions were inappropriate and said she was ready to accept responsibility for the controversy surrounding her behaviour, including consuming a substance during a livestream.
“I’m ready to be held accountable for my actions,” she said, noting that she had spent several days reflecting on the incident and recognised that her behaviour was wrong.
According to her, the livestream was particularly troubling because many young girls view her as a role model.
“For the substance I took on live video, that was very wrong of me because there are young girls that are looking up to be me one day,” she said, admitting that she had disappointed many people.
Mukoro also apologised directly to Seyi Tinubu, explaining that although she had previously apologised privately, she felt it was necessary to do so publicly because the perceived disrespect had occurred in public.
She also expressed regret to Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, kneeling while offering the apology for involving the monarch in the dispute.
Addressing activist Martins Vincent Otse, she described him as her “brother” and acknowledged that she now better understands the issues he has been raising about governance and accountability.
“You’re fighting for Nigerians and we can make Nigeria a better place,” she said, adding that he needs more supporters rather than opponents.
How the Controversy Began
The dispute began in late February after King Mitchy announced plans to renovate a dilapidated school within six days. The announcement sparked a public disagreement with VeryDarkMan, who accused her of being used to promote the image of the current administration.
The situation escalated when Mukoro posted what she described as a private chat with the Ooni of Ife, drawing criticism from many Nigerians who viewed the move as disrespectful to the traditional ruler.
Mukoro later said sustained online harassment led to the loss of her business Instagram account.
The controversy intensified further when she appeared distressed during a livestream in which she was seen ingesting a substance believed to be bleach, despite viewers urging her to stop.
In the aftermath, her management team initially released a statement on her Instagram page announcing her death, but later withdrew the claim and clarified that she was alive and receiving care.
Seyi Tinubu Responds
Reacting to allegations surrounding the dispute, Seyi Tinubu denied claims that he was sponsoring Mukoro’s activities or involved in threats against critics.
He stated that he had met the influencer only once in a public setting where he provided financial support for her NGO’s initiatives, similar to assistance he has given to other youth-led organisations.
Tinubu added that a follow-up meeting intended to review the impact of the donation did not take place because he had been unwell.
The controversy has continued to generate debate on social media, with many Nigerians calling for responsible behaviour from public figures who command large online audiences.
