Mass Metering Drive Aims to End Estimated Billing and Boost Transparency in Power Supply…
The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced plans to distribute prepaid electricity meters on a large scale across its franchise areas, as part of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), a $500 million initiative supported by the World Bank.
In a statement released on Wednesday, KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, confirmed that 128,000 prepaid meters will be provided free of charge to electricity consumers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States.
The program is designed to improve power supply management, increase billing transparency, and eliminate the controversial practice of estimated billing, which has long drawn complaints from consumers.
KEDCO said preparations for the rollout are in advanced stages but did not specify an official start date for installations. The company also highlighted that priority will be given to unmetered households and businesses in the three states.
KEDCO’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abubakar S. Jimeta, emphasized that the initiative is part of broader efforts under DISREP to enhance the financial and technical performance of Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies (DisCos), reduce commercial losses, and promote accountability within the sector.
Launched by the Federal Government in partnership with the World Bank, DISREP seeks to modernize grid infrastructure, close the metering gap, and introduce performance-based incentives for DisCos, ultimately aiming to restore the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s power sector.
