The Kebbi State Government has officially announced February 11 to 14 as the dates for the 2026 Argungu International Fishing Festival, one of Nigeria’s most iconic cultural events.
The announcement was made by the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, while addressing journalists shortly after an expanded meeting involving the State Festival Main Committee and the Emirate Local Organising Committee. The meeting was held on Friday at the Office of the Deputy Governor in Birnin Kebbi.
Speaking on the historical roots of the festival, the Emir explained that the Argungu Fishing Festival originated as a peace-building initiative between the Sokoto Caliphate jihadists and the Kanta Kingdom.
“Because of its deep historical and cultural significance, UNESCO later recognised and adopted the Argungu Fishing Festival as an international cultural event,” he said.
The Emir further noted that the festival played a vital role in fostering national unity in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War.
“Following the civil war, the festival became a symbol of unity, bringing fishermen from across the country together during the administration of General Yakubu Gowon,” he added.
According to the Emir, this year’s edition is expected to attract high-profile guests and cultural enthusiasts from around the world, providing a global platform to showcase the rich traditions and heritage of the Argungu Kingdom.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of the State Festival Main Committee and Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Tafida, assured that preparations are already at an advanced stage.
“We have established several subcommittees tasked with specific responsibilities to ensure a well-organised and successful festival,” Senator Tafida said.
He added that the state government has put in place comprehensive arrangements covering venue preparation, hospitality, security, logistics, and the provision of prizes and awards for deserving winners.
Senator Tafida urged members of the committees to remain committed and proactive. “I encourage all committee members to sustain the momentum and remain focused until we deliver a memorable and successful festival,” he stated.
The Argungu International Fishing Festival remains a major cultural attraction, celebrating peace, unity, and the enduring traditions of the Kebbi people while drawing global attention to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
