A political storm is brewing in Kebbi as the state’s APC lawmakers push back against explosive allegations by former Justice Minister Abubakar Malami, who accused Governor Nasir Idris of masterminding violence and clandestine arms deals.
Malami, who recently defected from the ruling APC to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has been in the spotlight since his convoy was attacked in Birnin Kebbi on September 1, 2025.
He accused Governor Idris and his allies of orchestrating the violence, describing it as “a direct threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty and internal stability.”
On September 10, the former Attorney General petitioned the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services, and the Inspector General of Police, alleging a plot to destabilise Kebbi State.
But in a sharp rebuttal Friday night in Abuja, the Kebbi APC National Assembly caucus dismissed Malami’s petition as false and politically motivated.
Speaking to journalists after their meeting, Senator Adamu Aliero said:
“We categorically state that these allegations are unfounded. They represent a desperate attempt by Mr Malami, now leader of an imaginary opposition party in Kebbi State, to undermine the peace and stability our people currently enjoy under Governor Nasir Idris.”
Aliero alleged that Malami himself had brought thugs from Sokoto, Koko, and Rara during his recent visit to Birnin Kebbi, and that they went on to attack the APC state secretariat, sparking violent clashes with party supporters.
He stressed that Kebbi has remained one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states, crediting the Idris administration for deliberate investments in security, close collaboration with security agencies, and strong community support.
The caucus urged the public to ignore Malami’s petition, framing it as an attempt to instill fear and destabilise the state for political gain.
