Kano State was thrown into mourning on Wednesday following the death of two serving members of the Kano State House of Assembly, who passed away within an hour of each other.
The lawmakers, Alhaji Sarki Aliyu Daneji, who represented Kano Municipal Local Government Area, and Alhaji Aminu Sa’adu, who represented Ungogo Local Government Area, were both members of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Alhaji Daneji, a close political ally of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, reportedly died shortly after news broke of the death of his colleague from Ungogo.
Sources within the Assembly said both lawmakers died after brief illnesses. Alhaji Sa’adu was said to have attended a committee meeting at his office in the Assembly complex just hours before his passing.
The announcement of the deaths caused visible shock and confusion within the Assembly, as lawmakers and staff struggled to come to terms with the loss of two colleagues in quick succession.
Both legislators are expected to be buried on Thursday in their respective hometowns in accordance with Islamic rites.
