Efforts to resolve the prolonged leadership dispute within the Kano Emirate Council appear to be gaining momentum, with the state government indicating that the crisis could be settled through dialogue and voluntary concessions by the parties involved.
State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said the administration is optimistic that the long-running tussle will be resolved peacefully, despite the matter currently being before the courts. According to him, ongoing consultations among key stakeholders have created room for understanding and reconciliation.
Waiya explained that discussions are focused on prioritising unity and stability in Kano, noting that some contenders are expected to voluntarily withdraw in the interest of peace. He stressed that the government’s approach is centred on consensus-building rather than confrontation.
He added that the emirship dispute, which has generated tension within the state, is being handled with sensitivity to cultural values and public sentiment, assuring residents that no action would be taken that could undermine harmony in the ancient city.
Commenting on internal political developments, the commissioner also expressed concern over divisions within the state’s executive leadership, particularly following the defection of several cabinet members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He suggested that such realignments could affect cohesion in governance if not carefully managed.
Waiya maintained that dialogue remains the most effective tool for resolving both political and traditional institution-related disputes, urging all parties involved in the emirship matter to place the collective interest of Kano above personal ambitions.
