Kano State has been rocked by a major political upheaval as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), triggering a mass departure of lawmakers and local government leaders. Alongside the governor, 21 members of the State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen also left the party.
The governor formally communicated his decision in a letter addressed to the NNPP leadership of Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, with the resignation taking effect immediately.
In the letter, Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for providing him the platform to pursue his political career since 2022. However, he cited ongoing leadership disputes and legal battles within the party as key reasons for his exit.
“Recent internal disagreements and persistent court cases have weakened cohesion and created deep divisions within the party.
“After careful consideration, I have concluded that resigning is in the best interest of Kano State. This decision is made in good faith and with continued commitment to peace, unity, and progress in the state”, Yusuf wrote.
The simultaneous resignation of lawmakers and local government chairmen underscores the magnitude of the internal crisis within the NNPP and raises serious questions about the party’s stability and future influence in Kano politics.
Secretary of the NNPP Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged receipt of Yusuf’s resignation and commended the governor for his achievements in infrastructure, urban development, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.
