Political tensions in Kano State have culminated in the resignation of Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, amid an impeachment process initiated by the State House of Assembly.
The resignation comes amid reports of internal political disagreements between Governor Abba Yusuf and his deputy, linked to shifts within the state’s ruling political structure and broader alignments within the NNPP and APC blocs.
The Kano State House of Assembly had earlier commenced impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor over allegations of misappropriation, issuing him a two-week ultimatum to respond before the deadline expired during the Eid-el-Fitr holiday period.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement confirmed the development in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Habib Mohammed, noting that the decision was taken in the interest of governance stability in the state.
According to the statement, “this decision, though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State”.
It further stated that “recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full discharge of the responsibilities attached to the office”.
The movement also clarified that the resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing, adding that “this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly”.
It stressed that “the Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and believes his record in public service reflects his integrity and commitment”.
The statement described the move as one of political maturity, noting that “rather, this step demonstrates statesmanship and a commitment to peace, political maturity, and the avoidance of unnecessary tension that may hinder governance and development in the state”.
It also revealed that Gwarzo intends to focus more on political engagements, stating that “he has also resolved to dedicate more time to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in strengthening its structures and engaging in political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections”.
The movement urged supporters and residents of Kano State to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to democratic principles following the development.
