Sailas Abungana, a defender of Football Kenya Federation Premier League side Kakamega Homeboyz, has died.
Abungana died on Wednesday night at the Kakamega General Hospital, a few minutes before midnight, according to a statement released by Homeboyz on Thursday morning.
Homeboyz said Abungana succumbed to head injuries following an attack on Tuesday night. He was 25 years old.
“The club can confirm that Sailas passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital,” Homeboyz said in the statement.
Abungana joined Homeboyz at the beginning of this season from National Super League side Gucha Stars FC that is based in Sameta, Kisii County.
“We are really devastated to learn of the demise of Sailas Abungana, our immediate former defensive player who switched sides to Sportpesa Premier League, Kakamega Homeboyz at the start of this season. A solid rock who was part and parcel of our promotion journey to Division One. A man who persevered through our lowest moments and fought through sweat and blood for our best moments,” Gucha Stars FC eulogised him.
Abungana was also part of the Shabana FC team, then under coach Sammy Okoth, that gained promotion to the Premier League in 2023, ending a 17-year wait.
The two later left the Glamour Boys and reunited at Gucha Stars, who were then featuring in the FKF Division One league. They helped Gucha earn promotion to the NSL a season later.
