Dozens of worshippers abducted during a church service in Kurmin Wali village, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have reportedly escaped from captivity and reunited with their families.
The Village Head of Kurmin Wali, Ishaku Dan’azumi, confirmed the development on Sunday, explaining that the victims broke free from the bandits’ hideout and fled to nearby communities for safety.
Dan’azumi disclosed that earlier reports which put the number of abducted worshippers at about 177 were inaccurate. After proper verification, it was confirmed that 80 people successfully escaped, while 86 worshippers remain in the custody of the attackers.
He described the situation as deeply distressing for affected families, noting that many are still struggling with trauma from the incident. The village head also condemned attempts by some individuals to politicise the abduction, describing such actions as insensitive to the suffering of the victims and their relatives.
Calling for urgent intervention, Dan’azumi appealed to the government and security agencies to intensify rescue operations to secure the release of those still held captive.
Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Police Command said it is preparing an official response. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, stated that a comprehensive statement on the Kurmin Wali abduction would be released in due course.
