The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has reviewed the recent statement issued by the Nigeria Police Force regarding the abduction incident in the Kurmin Wali community, located in the Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
In a Statement issued by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN acknowledges the difficulties involved in verifying security incidents, particularly in remote areas.
It however, believes these challenges do not excuse deficiencies in the way sensitive issues are communicated to the public, especially concerning mass abductions and threats to human life.
“The initial dismissal of reports surrounding this incident, prior to thorough investigation, was profoundly concerning. It led to confusion, exacerbated fear, and unjustly cast doubt on the credibility of nearly 170 worshippers, their families, clergy, and eyewitnesses who raised alarms. In matters of such gravity, public communication should never appear dismissive of the pain or apprehensions felt by those affected.
*While the intention to prevent panic is understandable, caution should not be conveyed in ways that suggest denial or indifference. Statements from senior security officials carry significant influence and must, therefore, be made with due diligence, empathy, and an acute awareness of their effect on public trust and social stability.”
CAN acknowledges the subsequent confirmation of the abduction and commends the Inspector-General of Police for ordering the deployment of operational and intelligence resources to the impacted area.
“These actions are essential and commendable; however, they must be accompanied by a more disciplined and community-oriented approach to crisis communication in the future.
“We urge all security agencies and relevant authorities to enhance coordination, improve verification processes, and ensure that credible reports from communities are treated with the seriousness warranted. The protection of victims, respect for genuine distress calls, and avoidance of misinformation—whether dismissive or sensationalized—are crucial.”
Additionally, CAN implores governments at all levels to urgently address the ongoing insecurity plaguing the nation, as recurring incidents jeopardize lives, disrupt worship, and undermine public confidence.
“We earnestly appeal for the immediate and unconditional release of all those abducted. Our prayers are for their safe return unharmed, and we call on security agencies to intensify their operational, intelligence, and diplomatic efforts toward securing their swift rescue. The lives of innocent citizens must be prioritized.
“As a national faith-based organization, CAN remains devoted to promoting peace, justice, and the protection of human dignity. We will continue to support affected communities and engage constructively with authorities in the shared pursuit of safety, accountability, and lasting security,” the Statement assured.
