Nigerian actress Jumoke Odetola has voiced her support for chef Hilda Baci following criticism of her record-breaking Jollof Rice festival, with some claiming the dish “wasn’t sweet.”
In an emotional Instagram post, Odetola described the backlash as “heartbreaking when negativity overshadows greatness”. She emphasized that achieving such a milestone requires not only courage but also mental, emotional, psychological, and financial strength.
“It takes real courage to attempt something extraordinary. It takes courage to dream big. But bringing that dream into reality takes even more than courage. It demands a whole lot of preparedness mentally, psychologically, emotionally, and financially,” she wrote.
Odetola questioned why some people feel unsettled by another person’s success, particularly a woman’s, urging critics to self-reflect rather than tear others down.
“Go somewhere private, where no one can distract you. Place your right hand on your left chest. That’s where your heart beats. Now ask yourself, slowly but honestly: why am I triggered by the success of a woman trying to make a mark in her field?” she added.
The actress also prayed for critics to find peace and healing from past pains that may have contributed to bitterness and toxicity.
“May God give us peace and happiness that surpass human understanding, and heal us from past pains that have transcended into bitterness, toxicity, and hatred,” she concluded.
Odetola’s remarks come in the wake of Hilda Baci’s historic feat, recognized by Guinness World Records, where she prepared the largest serving of Nigerian-style Jollof Rice, attracting nationwide attention and sparking conversations about women’s achievements in the culinary industry.
