Nollywood actress Juliana Olayode has shared a deeply personal account of her prolonged struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts, revealing that she suffered in silence for nearly three years.
In an emotional post shared on Instagram, the actress said she continued to show up publicly despite feeling overwhelmed internally, describing the period as one in which she was “dying inside” while hiding her pain from others.
Olayode explained that the experience reshaped her understanding of joy and emotional wellbeing, noting that her body began to shut down under the weight of depression. She said she gained physical weight during that time but described the emotional burden she carried as far heavier.
Reflecting on her journey, the actress said she sought professional help through therapy but ultimately found lasting comfort in her faith. She credited her recovery to what she described as complete healing through God, emphasising vulnerability and spiritual surrender as key to her process.
In her message, Olayode also addressed public misconceptions around depression and suicidal thoughts, warning against dismissing the struggles of those affected. She noted that people who have never experienced such challenges may misunderstand the depth of emotional pain involved.
The actress said she decided to speak out after receiving numerous messages from individuals facing similar struggles, encouraging them not to give in to despair and to believe that difficult seasons can pass.
Olayode’s disclosure has sparked widespread conversation online, with many commending her openness and the courage it takes to speak publicly about mental health challenges. Advocates say such testimonies help reduce stigma and remind those struggling that support and help are available.
