A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned to January 20, 2026, the case involving the driver of a Lexus SUV linked to the recent road accident involving former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
The adjournment followed the arraignment of the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, by the Ogun State Police Command on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous and negligent driving.
Briefing journalists on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the 46-year-old driver was formally charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court.
“I wish to inform the general public that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode (male), aged 46, was charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court today, January 2, 2026,” Babaseyi stated.
According to the police, the charges include dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
Other counts include reckless and negligent driving contrary to Section 6(1); driving without due care and attention causing bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1); and driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the same Act.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties, and subsequently adjourned the matter to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, while the driver was conveying Anthony Joshua and two of his friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. The Lexus SUV reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the instant deaths of Ayodele and Ghami.
Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries in the crash. The boxing star was later discharged from the hospital on Wednesday evening after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
Reports also indicate that Anthony Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay their final respects to Ayodele and Ghami, whose remains were being prepared for repatriation later that night.
