Reacting to the latest deadly explosions in Maiduguri, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), has called the attacks barbaric and urged urgent action to restore peace in the North-East.
In a statement released on Thursday, Secretary-General of JNI, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, expressed shock at the timing of the attacks, which occurred at the Monday Market, the Post Office, and near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, during Iftar and evening prayers. The blasts reportedly claimed at least 25 lives and left over 100 others injured.
Aliyu, who also serves as the President-General of JNI, described the incidents as “painful, cruel and utterly condemnable.
“These coordinated attacks are a direct affront to the peace and progress our communities have worked so hard to achieve.”, He added.
The organisation warned that the resurgence of violence indicates a lapse in vigilance, both by security agencies and civilians.
JNI urged authorities to strengthen operational strategies to counter the evolving tactics of insurgents, including ambushes and coordinated attacks. The group stressed that intelligence-led approaches are essential and called on citizens to actively support security efforts by reporting credible information.
Highlighting the broader implications of the violence, the group said:
“The repeated loss of innocent lives cannot be allowed to become normalized. Nigerians deserve better protection, and all levels of government must act decisively to prevent further tragedies”.
The organisation also called on the Federal Government to overhaul the national security framework with clear timelines, regular public briefings, and sustained interventions to combat terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes. It appealed for immediate compensation for victims, including payment of diyyah to bereaved families and full medical support for the injured.
Emphasising the need for collective action, the JNI urged stronger collaboration among security agencies, government officials, civil society, and political leaders to address insecurity effectively.
