Singer-songwriter and cultural storyteller Umzulu Phaqa, real name Sphiwe Moya, has announced that she is taking a break from the music industry.
In a statement shared on her Instagram page, the Aseyeke hitmaker said music hasn’t been working out for her.
“And just like that, senganele (I am enough). This music thing isn’t for me, and it isn’t working out,” she wrote.
“For now, I’m parking it. Thank you for the continued support. When I gather the strength again, I’ll be back. One day.”

New album
The announcement comes just days after she unveiled her new album inspired by the late Brenda Fassie, which she discussed in an interview with SABC News.
“We’re getting a pop album, inspired by the late Brenda Fassie, who was the queen of African pop music. I wanted those textures, so when you listen to the music-the synths, the groove, the happiness-you know the vibe. It’s my take on what a Nguni pop artist would look like,” she said.
Umzulu Phaqa rose to fame during the Covid-19 pandemic. In an interview with EWN, she explained that her music career took off post-pandemic.
“I discovered music post-Covid, when people were really receiving it for the first time. I’ve always sung, but I never thought it could be something,” she said.
“Funny enough, while people weren’t working during Covid, I was working.”
