The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that it had killed two Hezbollah members during airstrikes carried out the previous day in southern Lebanon, despite the existing ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed group.
In a statement, the Israeli army said it “struck and eliminated two Hezbollah terrorists in the areas of Bint Jbeil and Blida” on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the Hezbollah operative killed in Bint Jbeil had been actively involved in rebuilding the group’s military capabilities, which Israel says were significantly degraded during the recent conflict.
The operative killed in Blida, the army added, had been gathering intelligence on Israeli military positions.
Deadly Strike on Palestinian Refugee Camp
The announcement came less than 24 hours after at least 13 people were killed in an Israeli strike late Tuesday on the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
Israel said the attack targeted a Hamas training compound, though Hamas strongly denied the allegation, describing the claim as “lies” and insisting it has no military infrastructure inside Lebanon’s refugee camps.
Ceasefire Violations and Growing Friction
On Monday, the Israeli military said it had eliminated another Hezbollah member in south Lebanon, accusing him of coordinating the group’s activities with residents of the Mansouri area, where Israel launched the strike.
The Lebanese government has accused Israel of violating the U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire agreement reached on November 27, 2024, through continued airstrikes and by keeping Israeli forces inside Lebanese territory.
Israel, for its part, insists Hezbollah is working to rebuild its military strength in defiance of the ceasefire conditions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently repeated the accusation, claiming Hezbollah is attempting to rearm and restore its combat capabilities.
