Lagos took centre stage in global digital culture on January 21 as American streamer Darren Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, crossed the 50 million subscribers mark on YouTube during a live broadcast from the city.
The achievement makes IShowSpeed the first Black streamer to reach the milestone on the platform. The livestream and on-ground experience were curated by Nigerian culture and entertainment agency The Plug, which coordinated the streamer’s movements and cultural engagements throughout the day.
Livestream data showed that IShowSpeed began the broadcast with 49,931,591 subscribers before surpassing the landmark mid-stream. His channel later peaked at 50,044,380 subscribers as viewers from around the world tuned in to witness the moment live.
The milestone coincided with the streamer’s 21st birthday and unfolded alongside a series of cultural experiences that showcased Lagos’ energy and heritage. One of the standout moments was his visit to the Nike Art Gallery, where he met celebrated artist Nike Davies-Okundaye, wore a traditional Yoruba dansiki, learned the Bata dance, and adopted the Yoruba name Mojọ́láolúwà.
The broadcast also produced several viral clips, including IShowSpeed tasting Nigerian Jollof rice, which he praised as the best he had ever eaten despite reacting to its spiciness. Another widely shared moment captured his interaction with a local figure dubbed online as the “angriest man in Nigeria,” who declined a $1,000 offer before walking away.
During the day, the streamer met young fans at Meadow Hall School, where he interacted with students and participated in light sporting activities.
The celebrations concluded at Lulu Beach Club, where Afrobeats star Davido joined via FaceTime to congratulate IShowSpeed on both his birthday and the record-breaking achievement. Speaking at the event, the streamer described reaching 50 million subscribers in Lagos as the best birthday gift he could have received.
By the end of the livestream, Lagos had become the backdrop for one of YouTube’s most-watched creator milestones, further underscoring the city’s growing influence in global digital culture, driven by strategic creative direction from The Plug.
