Alexander Isak opened his Liverpool account to help secure a 2-1 win over Southampton in the League Cup third round on Tuesday.
The £125 million signing from Newcastle struck in the 43rd minute after Federico Chiesa intercepted a poor pass from Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. Isak’s finish came just two days after his 26th birthday and on his third appearance for the Reds.
Southampton hit back in the 76th minute through Shea Charles, capitalising on a defensive lapse from Wataru Endo, but substitute Hugo Ekitike spared Liverpool from penalties with an 85th-minute winner before being sent off for his shirtless celebration.
Elsewhere, Chelsea came from behind to beat third-tier Lincoln 2-1, avoiding an embarrassing exit. Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte overturned Rob Street’s opener, while Burnley suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff.
Wolves eased some of their league woes with a 2-0 victory over Everton, Brighton routed Barnsley 6-0 with Diego Gomez scoring four, and Fulham edged Cambridge 1-0 thanks to Emile Smith Rowe.
