A constitutional storm is brewing at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), where Vice Chairperson Isaac Rutto is facing calls for his removal after attending a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) National Governing Council meeting while the commission is overseeing the recruitment of some of the country’s most senior judges.
Rutto was photographed at State House on January 26, seated among UDA party leaders, just days after the JSC concluded interviews for 15 Court of Appeal positions and as it prepares to select judges for the High Court and Supreme Court. A Nairobi-based lawyer, Eric Mwirigi, has since filed a formal petition in Parliament, arguing that Rutto’s conduct violates the Constitution and undermines judicial independence.
