Fresh violence has erupted in Nigeria’s northeast, with reports confirming the killing of a top military commander, Brigadier General O.O. Braimah, in a suspected Boko Haram ambush in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to sources, the attack took place in the early hours of Thursday, as insurgents launched coordinated assaults on Benisheikh and surrounding communities.
Reports indicate that the attackers set several trucks and commercial vehicles on fire, causing panic among motorists and forcing travellers along the Maiduguri–Damaturu Road to abandon their journeys following the routine evening closure of the highway.
Eyewitnesses said a fierce gun battle ensued, with several insurgents, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, and security personnel reportedly killed during the exchange.
A local source confirmed that the brigade commander was among the casualties, while multiple vehicles were also seized by the attackers.
The insurgents were further said to have looted food supplies and vandalised infrastructure, including equipment belonging to a road construction company in Pulka.
As of the time of filing this report, the military command of Operation Hadin Kai has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
