Novak Djokovic overcame exhaustion and an ankle injury scare to defeat Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 and advance to the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Despite vomiting courtside and grimacing in pain after a slip in the first set, the 24-time Grand Slam champion rallied in the decider, breaking Munar twice to secure victory. Djokovic, 38, becomes the oldest player to reach an ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal and remains the tournament’s top seed following the withdrawal or exit of other leading players, including Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
He will next face Belgium’s Zizou Bergs, who edged Canada’s Gabriel Diallo in a thrilling three-set tiebreak.
