The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has ordered investigations into reported logistical and operational lapses recorded during the recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) elections.
Speaking on Wednesday at a high-level review meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at INEC headquarters in Abuja, Amupitan said staff found responsible for the shortfalls in Kuje and Kabusa would face disciplinary action if proven culpable.
He also disclosed that transporters blamed for delays in moving election materials to Kwali Area Council would be blacklisted, stressing that accountability remains central to the Commission’s electoral reforms.
The meeting comes four days after the conduct of the FCT council elections, as well as by-elections held in Rivers and Kano states last Saturday. It is aimed at assessing the performance of the polls, identifying operational gaps, and strengthening future electoral processes.
Beyond reviewing the outcomes of the recent elections, the session is expected to provide a platform for RECs to share field experiences, highlight challenges, and outline early preparations for the 2027 general election.
All Resident Electoral Commissioners from the 36 states and the FCT were in attendance.
Also present was a delegation from the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions, which paid a courtesy visit to the INEC chairman.
The leader of the delegation said the engagement was designed to deepen collaboration with INEC and enhance the credibility and effectiveness of local government elections nationwide.
Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in the management of elections across the country.
