The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, has reaffirmed his commitment to work closely with the National Assembly to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process and ensure credible, fair, and transparent elections.
According to a statement released by INEC on Monday, Prof. Amupitan made the pledge while addressing participants at the 56th Annual National Conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT), held at the Federal University of Lokoja, where he was also honoured for his dedication and service to the nation.
Speaking on ongoing efforts to amend the Electoral Act, the INEC Chairman said the Commission would actively collaborate with lawmakers to ensure that electoral reforms are rooted in lessons learned from past elections and aimed at building public trust in the democratic process.
“We will work with the National Assembly to ensure we have a learning electoral process and laws that every Nigerian can be proud of,” Amupitan said.
He emphasized that a sound legal framework remains the foundation of credible elections, adding that law and democracy are inseparable pillars of national progress.
“Law is not merely a set of rules but a foundation upon which societies build their progress,” he noted.
Amupitan further highlighted that one of INEC’s key reform objectives is to minimize electoral litigations by promoting fairness, transparency, and accountability at every stage of the electoral cycle.
“Let us strive to reach a point where electoral petitions in court become unnecessary,” he urged, calling for a process that genuinely reflects the will of the people.
During the conference, the Federal University of Lokoja presented Prof. Amupitan with a plaque of honour, recognizing his hard work, integrity, and inspirational leadership.
He also used the occasion to call on the academic community to continue supporting initiatives aimed at deepening Nigeria’s democracy and advancing electoral knowledge.
Prof. Amupitan was sworn in as INEC Chairman by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on October 23, 2025, following his Senate confirmation on October 16. He succeeded Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman from 2015 to October 2025.
