Indonesia’s national police chief has revealed that a student is the prime suspect in the explosions that rocked a mosque within a school complex in Jakarta, injuring dozens during Friday prayers. An investigation is now underway to uncover his background and possible motive.
Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo confirmed that, so far, no fatalities have been recorded from the blasts, which occurred in the Kelapa Gading area of North Jakarta.
He also disclosed that the suspected perpetrator is one of two injured individuals currently undergoing surgery.
“The motive is still being investigated,” Prabowo said. “We found toy weapons and several written materials, which are now being examined to understand the intent behind this incident.”
Earlier in the day, Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri urged the public to avoid speculation, emphasizing that the cause of the explosion was still under investigation.
Deputy Speaker of the House, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, who visited one of the hospitals treating victims, confirmed that the young male suspect was in surgery but provided no further details regarding his condition or potential motives.
Authorities continue to probe the incident as security forces work to determine whether the blast was accidental or deliberate.
