The Rivers State Assembly has refused to meet a high-profile peace delegation from the Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF), signaling that it remains steadfast in its pursuit of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The seven-member team, led by former Attorney General, Kanu Agabi, had hoped to mediate the political crisis, but repeated attempts to reach the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, were unsuccessful.
According to reports, the delegation had arrived in Port Harcourt last Saturday to hold discussions aimed at resolving the political impasse. They met with key state elders, including the Rivers State Leaders/Elders Forum, chaired by former governor Chief Rufus Ada George with Sir Gabriel Toby as vice chairman, and the Rivers State Elders Council, led by Chief Ferdinand Anabraba.
The development indicates that the lawmakers are determined to pursue the impeachment process rather than seek reconciliation. PANDEF had been given two weeks to mediate and submit a report on efforts to resolve the dispute.
The Assembly had earlier written to the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Simeon Amadi, requesting the establishment of a seven-member panel to investigate the allegations against the governor. The House is scheduled to resume sitting on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, amid expectations that impeachment proceedings could move forward.
