Afrobeats singer Omah Lay has boldly declared himself the leading artist of his generation, citing his strength in music creation and artistic expression.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Nando Leaks podcast, the “Soso” crooner said his confidence stems from his ability to consistently deliver quality music, which he believes sets him apart from his peers.
Omah Lay acknowledged that while he may not be the strongest when it comes to visuals, his core strength lies in the craft of making music. He suggested that his personality may influence his approach to visual storytelling.
“I am the best in this… I don’t want to brag too much, but when you put the whole Afrobeats category, I am the best,” he said.
The singer went further to claim that his musical ability stands unmatched over the past two decades, positioning himself at the top of the genre based on creative depth.
He, however, singled out Burna Boy as the only artist he considers close to his level, describing him as highly talented.
“The only person I sometimes put myself with is Burna Boy. Apart from Burna, it is me,” he said, adding that he is uncomfortable being grouped with other artists he believes do not match his standard.
Omah Lay’s remarks are likely to fuel ongoing debates within the Afrobeats space, where discussions around artistry, influence, and ranking among top performers continue to generate strong reactions from fans and industry stakeholders.
