Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has outlined the key factors that led to Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi being named the 2025 CAF Player of the Year ahead of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.
According to Ikpeba, Hakimi’s exceptional achievements with Paris Saint-Germain during the previous season made him the standout candidate for Africa’s highest individual honour. The 27-year-old full-back enjoyed a historic campaign with PSG, sweeping major titles—including the UEFA Champions League and Ligue 1—while narrowly missing out on the FIFA Club World Cup.
Hakimi edged out Osimhen and Egyptian star Mohamed Salah to claim the prestigious accolade, solidifying his status as one of Africa’s most accomplished footballers.
Osimhen earned his nomination after delivering an extraordinary season at Galatasaray, scoring 37 goals and providing eight assists in 41 appearances, helping the Turkish giants secure a domestic double. Despite Nigeria’s disappointment in missing out on World Cup qualification, Ikpeba praised Osimhen’s unwavering commitment to the Super Eagles.
Speaking on the outcome, Ikpeba stated:
“We are disappointed we are not going to the World Cup but Victor has been outstanding with his passion and determination when he plays for the national team with no limits.”
He added that Hakimi’s overall brilliance and trophy-laden season with PSG ultimately justified his triumph:
“For the three players, I think Hakimi has been brilliant, won the Ligue 1, the Champions League, and he won everything with PSG.
But I think for the beauty of the football, he is a deserving winner.”
