Disco says generation shortfall on national grid is forcing increased load shedding across its network….
Electricity distribution company Ikeja Electric has apologised to customers experiencing prolonged power outages across parts of its network, attributing the disruption to ongoing gas supply shortages affecting electricity generation nationwide.
In a public notice released on Friday, the distribution company acknowledged the inconvenience caused to households and businesses and assured customers that steps are being taken by stakeholders in the power sector to stabilise electricity supply.
“We understand the inconvenience the current power supply challenges may be causing you, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to your daily activities,” the company said.
Gas shortage hitting power generation
According to Ikeja Electric, the power disruptions are linked to a drop in electricity generation on Nigeria’s national grid due to limited gas supply to thermal power plants.
The company explained that the shortfall in generation has forced increased load shedding across several feeders within its distribution network.
“The situation is due to gas supply constraints affecting power generation on the National Grid, which has led to increased load shedding across our feeders,” the statement said.
Stakeholders working to stabilise grid
The distribution company also assured customers that operators across the electricity value chain are working to address the generation challenges.
“Please be assured that relevant stakeholders are working tirelessly to address the generation shortfall and restore stability to the grid,” the company added.
Ikeja Electric said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates to customers as improvements occur.
National generation drops below 4,000MW
The development comes amid broader challenges in Nigeria’s power sector.
Data released by the Nigerian Independent System Operator showed that electricity generation recently fell below the 4,000 megawatt threshold as gas shortages continue to affect power plants.
In a statement titled “Gas Constraints Lead to Temporary Reduction in Power Generation,” the operator disclosed that the national grid produced 3,940.53 megawatts as of 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, highlighting the ongoing fuel supply issues facing thermal power stations.
Customers asked for patience
Ikeja Electric thanked its customers for their patience while efforts continue to stabilise electricity supply.
“We truly appreciate your patience, cooperation, and understanding during this period. Thank you for bearing with us,” the company said.
