Nollywood actors IK Ogbonna and Rita Dominic have spoken out in defence of the movie A Very Dirty Christmas following concerns raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the film’s title.
CAN had criticised the title, describing it as offensive and insensitive to the Christian faith, particularly given the religious significance of Christmas.
Reacting in a statement shared on Instagram, Ogbonna clarified that the title was not intended to ridicule or undermine Christianity. He stressed that key members of the project, including the producer and director, are Christians, and said the film was created with respect for the season.
According to the actor, who portrayed the character Frankie, the title draws inspiration from Nigeria’s popular “Detty December” culture rather than any religious mockery. He added that the storyline explores meaningful themes such as love, forgiveness, and personal growth.
Ogbonna urged critics to assess the film based on its message rather than its name, acknowledging CAN’s concerns while appealing for broader understanding once the movie is watched in full.
Rita Dominic also weighed in, encouraging audiences to see the film before forming opinions. She defended artistic freedom, noting that creative expression allows filmmakers to tell stories that resonate emotionally with viewers.
She further promoted the film, produced by Ini Edo and directed by Akay Mason, describing it as entertaining and suitable for the holiday season.
Meanwhile, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has confirmed engagement with the film’s producers and has requested a modification of the title to address concerns about potential public offence.
The film is currently showing in cinemas nationwide amid ongoing discussions surrounding its title and creative intent.
