Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, will be representing Nigeria at a major international forum on public security taking place this week in China.
The Global Public Security Cooperation Forum (GPSCF), hosted by Beijing in the eastern city of Lianyungang, runs from September 16 to 18. The annual gathering brings together security ministers, police chiefs, and experts from around the world to discuss responses to cross-border crime and ways to strengthen international cooperation.
Egbetokun, who is leading the Nigerian delegation, is expected to deliver a keynote address on Thursday titled “Combating Transnational Crime and Countermeasures”.
His speech is expected to highlight Nigeria’s policing reforms, efforts against organised crime, and the country’s growing security partnerships with global allies. Hundeyin said Egbetokun’s attendance at the GPSCF reflects Nigeria’s determination to build stronger international alliances in tackling emerging threats.
Ahead of the forum, the police chief held talks with China’s Deputy Public Security Minister, Qi Yanjun. According to police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin, discussions focused on intelligence sharing, training opportunities, and deepening cooperation between Nigerian and Chinese security agencies.
Nigeria continues to battle multiple domestic security challenges, from jihadist insurgency in the northeast and mass kidnappings for ransom in the northwest to separatist unrest in the southeast. Officials say global collaboration remains central to strengthening law enforcement capacity and advancing technology-driven policing.
With Nigeria’s top cop on the global stage, Abuja hopes the outcomes of the forum will translate into concrete support, new tools, and deeper partnerships to enhance security at home.
