A crackdown on misconduct has been announced by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who has pledged a renewed era of accountability and reform within the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the Second Edition of the National Police Day Grand Parade held at Eagle Square, Abuja on Tuesday, Disu described the moment as a defining phase for the Force and its relationship with Nigerians.
He said his address marked his first major national outing since assuming office, stressing that National Police Day should serve not only as a ceremonial event but also as a moment of reflection on sacrifice, service, and improved policing standards.
The IGP commended President Bola Tinubu for institutionalising National Police Day, saying it reflects strong confidence in the Nigeria Police Force’s ability to reform and deliver better service to citizens.
He paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, assuring their families that their sacrifices would remain central to ongoing reforms within the Force.
Disu issued a strong warning that indiscipline, abuse of power, and misconduct would no longer be tolerated, adding that no officer would be exempt from accountability regardless of rank or position.
“There will be no sacred cows. Accountability will be firm, fair, and without exception”, he said.
At the same time, he assured personnel of improved welfare, better training, and enhanced operational support as part of ongoing institutional reforms.
Addressing public concerns, the police chief acknowledged the trust deficit between the Force and Nigerians, but promised deliberate steps to rebuild confidence through professionalism and service delivery.
He said the Force is transitioning into an intelligence-led and technology-driven institution designed to address modern security challenges more effectively.
Disu also emphasised stronger collaboration with the Armed Forces, other security agencies, traditional rulers, civil society, and the media to strengthen national security.
He commended corporate partners and sponsors for their support, describing them as vital to improving police welfare and operational efficiency.
The IGP reaffirmed that under his leadership, the Nigeria Police Force would prioritise integrity, discipline, and accountability, insisting that rebuilding public trust would be achieved through consistent action and reform.
