The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has launched an investigation into a viral video alleging impersonation during one of its examinations.
In the video, a woman accused of writing the exam on behalf of the Taraba State Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, Sarah Adi, was seen being interrogated. Another clip showed a man allegedly impersonating a bank manager.
In a statement signed by its Registrar/Chief Executive, Lanre Olasunkanmi, ICAN reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on all forms of examination malpractice, including impersonation.
“ICAN’s examination processes are guided by globally accepted standards of integrity, and any attempt to compromise them is treated with utmost seriousness,” the statement read.
“The Institute has commenced a thorough investigation into the matter. Appropriate disciplinary measures will be applied in line with established regulations, and findings will be communicated transparently to stakeholders.”
ICAN also urged the public to avoid speculation or hasty conclusions based on unverified claims, stressing its commitment to protecting the credibility of its examinations and the reputation of the accounting profession in Nigeria and beyond.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Sarah Adi has denied sponsoring an impersonator to sit the exam on her behalf.
Speaking in an interview, she dismissed the allegations as a plot orchestrated by a “powerful cartel” determined to tarnish her image.
“This started with labour action in the state, where they mobilised people to protest against me for removing ghost workers. Unfortunately for them, the governor has full confidence in me,” she said.
“Another example is my billboard in Wukari, which was mutilated because of my solidarity with the governor. So, don’t be surprised if I am accused again. We are beginning to identify the unseen hands behind these attacks.”
The controversy has sparked heated discussions online, with ICAN assuring stakeholders that its ongoing probe will be handled with transparency and fairness.
