Business leader Ibukun Awosika, the first female chairperson of First Bank of Nigeria, has advised couples not to let finances become a source of conflict, stressing that teamwork and mutual understanding are more important than wealth.
Speaking during a sermon at Celebration Church International, Awosika shared insights from her own marriage, highlighting how her risk-taking approach in business complemented her husband’s prudence as a petroleum engineer.
“When I say make the money of no consequence in your home, I’m speaking from personal experience,” she said. “We will never go hungry because he will make sure that we’re not. I’m a risk taker, he’s organized and prudent — together, we balance each other.”
Awosika also reflected on their journey of faith, citing Amos 9:13 as a guiding promise in their lives. She recounted how 13 years into their marriage, her husband successfully secured an oil field, demonstrating the rewards of patience, collaboration, and shared vision.
“Whatever way I behaved in the 13 years before, I was about to reap my reward in the years after, and I have reaped them big,” she noted.
Emphasising her key lesson, Awosika urged couples to view money as a tool to achieve shared goals rather than a source of tension.
“One plus one is what? Is one. You haven’t found a team until you find a team of a husband and a wife who understand who they are in Christ and work together as one. Nothing can stop them,” she concluded.
Her message highlights the importance of alignment, shared values, and teamwork in creating a strong and prosperous marital partnership.
