Nollywood actor Ibrahim Yekini has partnered with WEBEK Studios to produce their first feature-length film, ‘Abeni.’
The project, recently announced by WEBEK Studios, marks a major milestone for the fast-rising production company. ‘Abeni’ is directed by Esse Akwawa, CEO of WEBEK Studios, with Samuel Olasehinde serving as co-director and co-writer. Together, they deliver a film rich in visionary direction, cultural depth, and emotional resonance.
Filmed at the Africhatta Film Village in Oyo State, known for its authentic representation of Yoruba culture, the movie is inspired by a true but undocumented historical narrative passed down through generations.
‘Abeni’ tells the story of a courageous young woman who challenges societal norms by pursuing the sacred craft of forging, a tradition historically reserved for men. Her journey of resilience and rebellion forms the emotional heart of the film, blending mythic storytelling with raw, human emotion.
The production is supported by Co-Executive Producers Seun Dania and Ibrahim Yekini, whose involvement enhanced the authenticity and scale of the project. Speaking on the collaboration, Yekini said:
“Being involved in ‘Abeni’ allowed me to connect deeply with a story that mirrors the strength of our ancestors. The film sheds light on a remarkable young woman whose love for forging pushed her beyond the boundaries of her time. Working with WEBEK Studios reaffirmed my belief in the power of African storytelling and the importance of preserving our truth.”
Rooted in Yoruba culture and inspired by real history, the film explores themes of courage, destiny, gender empowerment, and cultural pride, making it both an inspiring cinematic experience and a vital act of cultural preservation.
With ‘Abeni’, WEBEK Studios and Ibrahim Yekini bring to life a story that has remained untold, highlighting the importance of celebrating African heritage and female trailblazers in the arts.
