Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), has said he successfully restored peace and stability to the state under exceptionally difficult circumstances, while stressing that much more remains to be done to consolidate the gains achieved.
Speaking on Tuesday at a public lecture titled “Good Governance and Democratic Dividends” delivered by Prof. Abiodun Amuda-Kanmike, SAN, as part of transition activities at Government House, Port Harcourt, Ibas described the past six months of his administration as both challenging and defining.
He said the peaceful conduct of the August 30th local government elections, which marked the return of democratic governance at the grassroots, was the most significant achievement of his tenure.
“When we began this assignment on March 18, 2025, our core mandate was to restore peace and stability. By the grace of God and with the cooperation of all stakeholders, we have come this far,” Ibas said.
He explained that the emergency administration was never a choice but a necessity forced by insecurity, political gridlock, and a breakdown of trust.
“In hindsight, it taught us enduring lessons — that peace is priceless, that without security no aspiration is possible, and that when governance falters, opportunism fills the vacuum, endangering lives and livelihoods,” he noted.
Ibas expressed deep gratitude to Rivers people for their resilience and support, describing them as “indomitable and steadfast.” He added:“The stability we have restored is the foundation upon which democracy is now rebuilt. Much remains to be done, but the foundations are laid. Let us build on it and prove that Rivers, the Treasure Base of the Nation, can also be a model of good governance in Nigeria.”
He further urged Rivers citizens to rise above personal ambition, embrace tolerance, forgiveness, and reconciliation, and work collectively to ensure that democratic dividends reach every household.
Earlier, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Worika, said the lecture came at a defining moment as the state transitions back to democratic governance.
Guest lecturer Prof. Amuda-Kanmike commended the Ibas-led interim administration, describing Rivers’ experience as an example other states should learn from during moments of political crisis.
