Veteran Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu has shared a deeply personal story about how she ended her wedding plans after enduring repeated acts of violence from her then-partner.
Speaking on the talk show Real Life with Aunty Ayo Adesanya, Nwosu revealed that the turning point came when her fiancé physically assaulted her, dragging her by the hair until she started bleeding.
According to the Fuji House of Commotion star, the incident prompted her to call off the wedding just a day before it was scheduled to take place.
Despite pressure from family members and her partner to proceed, Nwosu said she made the difficult decision to protect herself, refusing to sign the marriage papers.
“Marriage is not a do-or-die affair,” she said, warning women against staying in abusive relationships out of fear or societal expectations. “When domestic violence becomes too much, it’s best to walk away. If you accept it once, you’ll keep accepting it for the rest of your life.”
The actress described one particularly traumatic moment when her partner broke down a door, attacked her while she was cooking, and left her bleeding. She said she found the courage to defend herself and realized she could no longer remain in the relationship.
Nwosu urged women to take domestic violence seriously and never believe an abuser’s apology after repeated acts of aggression.
“Don’t stay with a man who beats you and apologizes later. Once it happens, it will happen again,” she cautioned.
Her testimony adds to ongoing conversations about gender-based violence and the importance of self-preservation in relationships, especially within conservative social contexts where marriage is often seen as mandatory.
