A US Air Force Reserve team, known as the “Hurricane Hunters,” flew directly into the eye of Hurricane Melissa on Monday to collect vital data for the National Hurricane Center.
Melissa, a category five storm with winds reaching 175mph (282km/h), has been classified as the most powerful hurricane of 2025.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring the storm as it approaches Jamaica, with landfall expected late Monday or early Tuesday.
After passing Jamaica, the hurricane is forecast to move across eastern Cuba and the Bahamas, bringing the potential for catastrophic winds, heavy rainfall, and dangerous storm surges.
The data collected by the Hurricane Hunters will be critical in refining forecasts, issuing timely warnings, and helping emergency services prepare for the hurricane’s impact.
With Melissa’s slow approach heightening anxiety for residents, authorities continue to urge evacuations and preparedness measures across affected regions.
