Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has criticised his old club’s summer transfer strategy, saying the Red Devils should have prioritised signing a central midfielder before bringing in attacking players like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Hargreaves argued that a strong central midfield addition could have solved many of the team’s ongoing problems.
Manchester United were linked with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba during the transfer window but failed to complete a deal. Instead, the club signed Cunha, Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško, and goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
“Bruno is their best player by a country mile, then they go and sign two No. 10s to play in his position,” Hargreaves told reporters.
“He’s now forced to play deeper, almost like a defensive midfielder. I understand the need for more goals — but if you already have the best No. 10 in the division in Cole Palmer, why push him deeper just to accommodate others?”
Hargreaves added that a midfield signing would have allowed Bruno Fernandes to play his natural game alongside the new forwards.
“So why didn’t you just sign a central midfield player and let Bruno do his thing with Cunha? Then get a goalkeeper. It would have fixed a lot of issues,” he said.
