Former Bayern Munich and Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has warned that Chelsea’s young squad will struggle in the Champions League and other major competitions this season without experienced reinforcements.
Speaking after the Blues’ 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday, Hargreaves urged Chelsea to target Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, a reported Liverpool target and Chelsea academy graduate, to bolster Enzo Maresca’s side.
Chelsea fell 2-0 behind in the first half at the Allianz Arena through Trevoh Chalobah’s own goal and a Harry Kane penalty. Cole Palmer pulled one back, but Kane’s second sealed victory for the hosts.
Hargreaves praised Chelsea’s midfield trio of Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Palmer but stressed the need for a seasoned leader in defence.
“Having these young guys is amazing but they need a mentor – that Thiago Silva type – to guide them in tough games like Munich,” Hargreaves told TNT Sports.
Guehi, whose contract with Crystal Palace runs until 2026, was linked with a move to Liverpool this summer but remained at Selhurst Park. Hargreaves believes his reliability and leadership could prove invaluable at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea return to Premier League action this weekend with a clash against Manchester United.
