Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has issued a stern warning to manager Arne Slot, insisting that the Dutchman risks losing his job if he continues to start Mohamed Salah.
Hamann’s remarks come in the aftermath of Liverpool’s 4-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League earlier this week, a match in which Salah’s defensive contribution was heavily criticized. The ex-Germany international argued that Salah’s lack of effort during PSV’s second goal highlighted a major problem within the team.
According to Hamann, Slot must now make a decisive call regarding the Egyptian star’s place in the starting lineup, suggesting that persisting with Salah could cost the manager his position.
“There comes a point when you have [got] to drop players. Even big players. Slot has a decision to make, does he get the sack with Salah or keep his job without him?
“What Salah did for that second PSV goal… I think Slot had one chance to take him off straight away; what he did there was disgraceful.
“For a player the calibre of Salah. It pains me to say… but the way he let the player go past him without doing anything to help the team,” Hamann told newsmen.
Salah remains one of Liverpool’s biggest stars and played a major role last season as the club lifted the Premier League title, but the team has struggled for form under Slot in recent weeks. The manager now faces intense scrutiny as Liverpool’s performances continue to fall below expectations.
