Gunmen opened fire at a football field in central Mexico on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and wounding 12 others, according to local authorities.
Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto says the attackers arrived as a football match was ending and began shooting at those present. Ten people died at the scene, while another victim later died in hospital. Among the wounded were a woman and a minor.
In a statement posted on social media, Prieto describes the shooting as part of a wider surge in criminal violence gripping the city. He appealed to President Claudia Sheinbaum for federal assistance to restore security and protect residents.
The Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office says it has launched an investigation and is coordinating with federal authorities to reinforce security in the area.
Guanajuato recorded the highest number of homicides in Mexico last year, as the local Santa Rosa de Lima gang continues to battle the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel for control of territory.
Despite the attack, Mexico’s government says the national murder rate in 2025 fell to its lowest level since 2016, though analysts warn official figures may understate the scale of ongoing violence.
