With Guinea-Bissau now under military control, President Bola Tinubu on Thursday joined an emergency online meeting of ECOWAS leaders to discuss the region’s next steps.
The summit, held less than 24 hours after soldiers toppled President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and announced General Horta Nta Na Man as head of a one-year transitional government, was convened to deliberate urgent regional intervention and diplomatic responses.
Images released by the State House Media Department showed Tinubu taking part in the deliberations from Abuja as the regional bloc moved quickly to address the escalating situation.
The virtual gathering brought together West African Heads of State and Government to evaluate the crisis, weigh response options, and reaffirm ECOWAS’ firm stance against military takeovers and unconstitutional political transitions.
Tinubu, who previously led the ECOWAS Authority for two consecutive terms until June 2025, joined member states in considering measures aimed at restoring constitutional rule, stabilising Guinea-Bissau, and safeguarding democratic governance across the sub-region.
The latest coup adds to a growing list of military interventions in West Africa and has triggered renewed concern over democratic reversals, security fragility, and the future of regional stability.
