The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has charged Nigerian youths to take responsibility for safeguarding their votes during the 2027 general elections.
Obi gave the charge while addressing students of Dominican University in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The former Anambra State governor said meaningful change in Nigeria depends largely on the vigilance and commitment of young people, stressing that electoral integrity cannot be outsourced.
According to him, development is not determined by tribe or race but by knowledge and competence, noting that Nigeria’s persistent struggle to provide basic amenities is unacceptable given its abundant resources.
Obi lamented that despite the country’s endowments, leadership failures have continued to undermine progress. He added that the era of overreliance on globalisation is fading, insisting that nations must now build strong internal systems anchored on good governance and informed citizen participation.
He urged youths to see vote protection as a personal responsibility tied directly to their future.
“Development doesn’t come with tribe; it comes with knowledge. Competent leadership is the only way to turn these vast resources into wealth,” Obi said.
“It is you that will protect your vote, not me. It is our country, but it is your future that is at stake. A new Nigeria must begin within the classroom.”
In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Dominican University, Prof. Jacinta Opara, said Obi’s visit had significantly boosted the morale of both staff and students, describing it as timely and inspiring.
