Nigeria’s women’s national rugby league team, the Green Falcons, have made a dream debut at the Women’s Rugby League World Series, defeating Ireland 10–0 in the semi-final clash held in Canada on Monday night.
The Falcons marked their historic first appearance in the global tournament in style, with Fedelia Omoghan opening the scoring at 8:30 p.m. (WAT) to record Nigeria’s first-ever try in the competition — a moment that sparked jubilation among fans worldwide.
Nigeria maintained their momentum as Rachel Iliya, supported by Shondell Akhabue, powered through the Irish defence with a brilliant solo run to secure the second try, sealing an emphatic win and a place in the grand final.
With the victory, the Green Falcons have booked a showdown against Fiji in what promises to be a thrilling final encounter.
Representing Africa with pride, passion, and power, the Falcons’ display of teamwork, discipline, and determination has inspired a new generation of athletes and reinforced Nigeria’s growing reputation in international rugby.
“This victory is more than a win, it’s a statement. These women have made history for Nigeria and Africa, proving that we belong on the world stage,” said Okeke Chika, Head of PR and Marketing, Nigeria Rugby League Association.
The Women’s Rugby League World Series Final will see Nigeria take on Fiji later this week, as the Green Falcons aim to crown their historic campaign with a championship title.
